As part of my job, placing grocery orders online is something I am very familiar with. I place at least two orders online each week, and wait in anticipation for the order and to see what I have to work with. Sadly, I am always disappointed in the results of the deliveries; either something is missing, damaged or has been substituted with a completely different item (and I mean completely different… as in ordering organic whole milk french vanilla yogurt and getting non-organic low fat plain Greek yogurt). I first heard about Walmart To Go when I was shopping at a local Walmart for work, and signed up to receive some information by e-mail. To be honest, I was a little worried, and skeptical about trying a new delivery service because of my past experiences, but I am generally pretty happy with the customer service I get at Walmart, so when I was given the opportunity to try Walmart’s new “To Go” delivery service, I was pretty excited!
I love the convenience of online grocery shopping. It saves me so much time, and I feel like it saves me money too since it reduces impulse buying. On Walmart To Go, your shopping cart is on the right side of your screen, showing your subtotal, so you know exactly how much you’re spending, so if you’re shopping on a budget, you can figure out if you REALLY need that extra snack or in my case ice cream ;).
Walmart To Go’s website is simple to navigate, loaded quickly and was very organized. I really wasn’t too sure what I wanted to order, since I just bought some groceries so I decided to add things that are usually wrong from other delivery services to see how Walmart To Go compared.
As I was browsing through the items, I noticed that the price per pound or price per ounce of each item was displayed under the price. Since I have to shop on such a tight budget for my job.. shoot, at home too, I like seeing this so that I can compare the prices between brands, and organic options.
In addition to grocery items, Walmart To Go offers home items, laundry and cleaning products, furniture, bath and skin care items, toys, diapers and wipes, towels, sheets, dishes – almost anything you could think of getting at Walmart. The selection, of course isn’t as broad as it would be going into the actual store, but there is a vast selection of items – you’ll really be amazed to see what you can buy online and have delivered the next day without the hassle of the post office or UPS.
Next I reviewed my cart. There is a spot in your “grocery cart” for substitutions. Checking this box allows for Walmart shoppers to substitute a similar item for the item you ordered if it isn’t in stock. I usually have VERY bad luck with substitutions (see above), but I left all the boxes checked to allow for substitutions, hoping for the best.
After finishing up my order, I chose my delivery time. They offer two options, two-hour windows for $7.00 and four-hour windows for $5.00. I’m pretty sure when I saw the delivery price, my jaw hit the floor as I usually pay two times the two-hour window price for a four-hour window delivery slot. The next big thing that astonished me was the fact that they deliver all the way up until 11:00 P.M.! How awesome for working Mom’s and Dad’s who just don’t have the time to go to the grocery store after work. I chose the 7:00 P.M. – 11:00 P.M. slot, and patiently waited for my order!
The entire ordering process was absolutely flawless. The only thing I didn’t like about the website was the
My first order arrived! The delivery driver, Robert came at 7:45! Only 45 minutes into my delivery window! Bonus. He was very polite and professional. He told us that two of our items needed to be substituted. Before I could say anything, he apologized and told me what the items were. He then proceeded to ask me if the substitutions were okay, and asked me if I wanted to review the items to see if they were okay. If they weren’t okay, I was told that I would be refunded my money, but I could still keep the item to try it out.
I reviewed the substitutions, and it was the slightest substitution. I ordered diced tomatoes with chiles, and got fire roasted tomatoes with chiles, and the second thing that was substituted was my cereal. I ordered an organic cinnamon toast crunch, and got an organic cinnamon oat variety – very similar!
As Robert handed me my grocery bags one by one being sure to be very careful as to not damage or break anything. Everything he gave us was packaged perfectly. Glass bottles were in separate bottles, so that they did not clank together during transit, our bread was alone, and was the first thing we were given, the cold items were bagged together and the miscellaneous items were packaged alone. The cold items were ice cold, and my greens were crisp and fresh.
After getting all of my items, Robert handed my my receipt, and had us sign for the order. When we asked him if there was a spot to leave a tip, he informed us that they were not allowed to receive tips – bummer. He did such a great job and truly deserved a tip. The last thing Robert told us before wishing us a great night and a Happy Easter was that if we had any questions, comments or concerns about our order to call the number on the top of the receipt, and someone from our local store will answer and help us.
Upon reviewing the receipt I noticed the note they left us about the substituted items, “We are very sorry but we had to substitute the following items. Please note, if the substituted item is more expensive than the one you ordered, we will only charge you the price of your ordered item.” Any other place I have ever ordered from has always charged me the more expensive price. Thank you Walmart for your exceptional levels of customer service.
Overall, this was an absolutely spectacular experience. From the ordering to the delivery to the enjoyment of our groceries, I give Walmart To Go an A+, and will definitely be using Walmart To Go for home and work delivery from here on out!
