National Hot Chocolate Day – Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate

Round up your ingredients, because tomorrow is National Hot Chocolate Day, and this Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate Recipe is the perfect way to celebrate!

This recipe couldn’t get any simpler – toss all of the ingredients in your slow cooker, give it a stir, turn it on and let it sit for 2 hours.  Once 2 hours are up, give it a little whisk, and check the temperature, if the hot chocolate is hot enough, get out a ladle and serve it up with your favorite toppings!

I got the idea for making Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate from my friend Toni, at her daughter’s birthday party.  She had this really awesome Hot Chocolate Bar set up, and it had all sorts of toppings for your hot chocolate, and she kept the hot chocolate warm in the slow cooker – genius!

Hot Chocolate Toppings

Marshmallows – mini, vanilla, caramel… any marshmallows
Chocolate Chips – milk, dark, white, butterscotch, peanut butter, mint
Candy Canes or Crushed Peppermint Candies
Toffee Bits
Caramel Bits
Cinnamon or Cinnamon Sticks
Finely Chopped Nuts – almonds, pecans, peanuts
Whipped Cream
Flavored Coffee Syrups – vanilla, peppermint, mocha, cinnamon
Chocolate Syrup
Coarse Sea Salt
Booze – kaluah, creme de menthe, baileys, amaretto, peppermint schnaps, grand marnier

Choose your favorite toppings, and top your hot chocolate and enjoy.  My favorite way to top my hot chocolate is with extra dark chocolate chops, a touch of creme de menthe and some whipped cream!  Share your favorite way to dress up your hot chocolate in the comments.

Here’s the recipe:

Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate


4 cups whole milk
1/2 cup half and half
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 cups milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (or more milk chocolate chips)


Add all ingredients to base of slow cooker, and stir to combine.

Cook on low for 2 1/2 hours.  Whisk to combine and serve topped with favorite toppings.

Turn slow cooker to warm.
