3 Puppy Chow Recipes for National Cereal Day

Today is National Cereal Day, and to celebrate I am sharing 3 of my favorite Puppy Chow, or Muddy Buddies if you prefer recipes that use more cereals than just Chex cereal – S’Mores Puppy Chow, Cinnamon Roll Puppy Chow and Peanut Butter Crunch Puppy Chow!

Cereal is the most popular breakfast food in America.  At any given time, there is probably about 10 different types of cereal in my pantry and a box on the counter. And, not only is cereal good for breakfast, it makes a great bedtime snack.  Really, let’s be honest… cereal is good any time of day!

Last week, King Soopers had a sale on big family size boxes of cereal for $1.99 – you were allowed 5 boxes, and I bought 5 boxes!  This is where that extra grocery budget money that I talk about in my monthly meal plan comes in handy – now, I don’t have to buy cereal for about 2 months!

Other than being eaten for breakfast, one of the most popular uses for cereal is probably Rice Krispie Treats!  No one can resist them, and they are so easy to make.  Another great use of cereal is Chex Mix.  And you can use cereal in a savory way by breading chicken or pork chops with cornflakes!  The possibilities with cereal are endless,  but other than just eating a big bowl of cereal, my favorite way to use cereal is to make Puppy Chow, or Muddy Buddies.

There are so many ways to make Puppy Chow, and these three recipes below all use other cereals in addition to Chex to take the puppy chow to the next level.

S’Mores Puppy Chow

This is the Puppy Chow that Anthony was most excited for.  Golden Grahams are mixed with chunks of dark chocolate, mini marshmallows and rice Chex that has been tossed in melted milk chocolate and powdered sugar and cocoa powder.  If I could have only toasted the marshmallows first with a blow torch, this Puppy Chow would be taken to an entirely new level!

Ingredients:

3 cups rice chex cereal
1 1/2 cups golden grahams cereal
1 cup mini marshmallows
1 cup dark chocolate chunks
1 cup milk chocolate
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder

Directions:

In a large microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips, stirring every 20 seconds until melted.  Add Chex and gently stir to combine.

In a gallon sized ziplock bag, combine cocoa powder and powdered sugar.  Add chocolate covered Chex and gently toss to completely cover.  Spread in an even layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment to dry.

Combine dried Chex with Golden Grahams, chocolate chunks and marshmallows and gently toss to combine.

Cinnamon Roll Puppy Chow

DJ is really excited about this Puppy Chow.  Cinnamon Toast Crunch is mixed with pecans and rice Chex that has bean coated in white chocolate and cream cheese and then tossed in powdered sugar and cinnamon.

Ingredients:

3 cups rice Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups cinnamon toast crunch cereal
1 cup white chocolate
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup sliced almonds

Directions:

In a large microwave safe bowl, melt white chocolate chips, stirring every 20 seconds unAl smooth. Add Chex cereal and gently stir to combine.

Add powdered sugar and cinnamon to gallon size ziplock bag and add white chocolate covered cereal to bag.  Gently toss to completely cover.  Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment to dry.

Mix with Cinnamon Toast Crunch and almonds.

Peanut Butter Crunch Puppy Chow

This crunchy Puppy Chow combines Capt’n Crunch with rice Chex that has been covered in melted dark chocolate and peanut butter and then tossed in powdered sugar, mini Reeces cups and Reeces pieces for the ultimate peanut butter snack!

Ingredients:

3 cups rice Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups Capt’n Crunch cereal
1 cup milk chocolate chips
2 tbsp peanut butter
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup Reeces pieces
1/2 cup mini Reeces cups, cut in half

Directions:

In a large microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and peanut butter, stirring every 20 seconds until melted.  Add Chex and gently stir to combine.

In a gallon sized ziplock bag, combine cocoa powder and powdered sugar.  Add chocolate covered Chex and gently toss to completely cover.  Spread in an even layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment to dry.

Mix with Capt’n Crunch and Reeces.

How irresponsible. Chocolate is toxic for dogs. Publishing a “Puppy Chow” recipe with poison for dogs? NO.

    • This is not a recipe for dogs. If you read the post you will see that another name for Puppy Chow is Muddy Buddies and that’s what this is – a cereal dessert for kids.
