Let’s face it Mom’s… sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking a big meal. Even if it’s a 20 minute meal. But, it’s hard finding meals that are ready to cook, or cook quickly in one dish without all of the added chemicals and garbage. So, when I was asked by Horizon Organic to check out their macaroni and cheese I jumped on the opportunity. Especially since I am leaving for North Carolina this weekend, and don’t want a lot of groceries in the fridge.
Horizon Organic has a bunch of different kinds of macaroni and cheese to choose from – everything from microwaveable – like the EasyMac we all loved as kids to white cheddar mac and even a Super Mac which has added protein. All varieties are made with Horizon organic cheese, certified organic pasta and no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
Anthony tried the microwaveable macaroni and cheese first, and absolutely devoured it. I found the pasta to be a little mushy in the microwavable mac and cheese, but I like my pasta VERY al dente. Anthony didn’t seem to mind though, and he enjoyed his lunch. It was nice to be able to have a quick and easy lunch solution for him that I actually feel okay about serving him.
Next, we tried the SuperMac. Like other varieties, it is made with organic pasta and cheese but has 12 grams of protein per serving. Making Horizon Organic Macaroni and Cheese is just like making blue box – bring a big pot of salted water to a boil, cook the pasta, drain and then add butter, cream or milk and the cheese sauce mix. The recipe on the side of the box calls for Horizon Dairy milk and butter, but I just used the butter and milk that were in my fridge.
Once the pasta was cooked and drained, and I added the milk, cream butter and cheese sauce mix it was done. Which was a nice change from the traditional blue box or Kraft Dinner for my Canadian readers, that we are all used to because I didn’t have to wait for the sauce to thicken. It was thick right away, and the cheese sauce stuck to the pasta.
Overall I was very impressed with Horizon Organic Macaroni and Cheese, and I felt good about serving it to my family. The macaroni and cheese is full of wholesome, organic ingredients, it was ready in 10 minutes, with only one pot to wash, and my family enjoyed it.
Would I buy this macaroni and cheese again? Yes. Although it costs about $1 more than blue box, there are ALWAYS coupons in the mail, and it’s totally worth the extra dollar, because of the natural, organic ingredients.
I still have a box of white cheddar macaroni and cheese to try, and I also have one more microwaveable mac and cheese for those nights when mama is just toooooo tired to cook. I liked Horizon’s products before, especially since I can get a gallon of Horizon Organic milk for $4.92 at Walmart, and now knowing that they have an easy organic dinner night solution, I like them even more!
