Are you in the Halloween spirit yet? The Halloween Dead Man Meatloaf that I shared the other day got me excited to make and share some more easy Halloween recipes, like this spooky version of Beanies & Wienies – Spiders & Worms In Dirt.
I love Beanies & Wienies, and have made different Halloween versions of this recipe in the past, but this one is my favorite! The black bean pasta for the hot dogs, and the ketchup red eyes make the “spiders” look so creepy sitting on top of the baked beans. And the bacon ‘wood logs’ add the perfect finishing touch. And, the “worms” are just rotini pasta. Kids and adults are going to LOVE this creepy Halloween dinner!
I served mine in a cast iron skillet for ease of cooking and serving, and I like how it looked, but you can transfer it to any dish you’d like – maybe a fun Halloween platter?
Spiders & Worms In Dirt
For Baked Beans
1, 24 oz can baked beans
10 strips bacon, diced
1 small onion, diced
½ green pepper, minced
1 cup BBQ sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp salt
1tsp each; black pepper, garlic powder and paprika
For Spiders, Worms & Logs
4 hot dogs, cut into quarters
1 pkg black bean pasta
For Baked Beans
In a large deep skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy, stirring constantly – about 8-10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove bacon to a plate lined with paper towel.
Add onion and green pepper, and cook, stirring frequently until onions are soft and translucent – about 8 minutes.
Add beans, BBQ sauce, brown sugar and spices to pan, and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low, and let simmer 15 minutes.
While baked beans are simmering, make spiders and worms.
Cut hot dogs into quarters, and carefully push four pieces of black bean spaghetti through each piece of hot dog to make ‘legs’.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, and cook spiders according to pasta package directions. Drain and set aside.
Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil and cook 10 pieces of rotini pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut 3 strips of bacon in half, and place on a wire rack on a baking sheet lined with foil for 8 minutes. Carefully flip and cook for another 8 minutes, or until crispy.
To serve, arrange bacon strips, rotini pasta and spiders across baked beans. To make eyes on spiders, lightly dip a corn holder in ketchup and touch hot dog.
I hope that you love this fun Halloween Spiders & Worms In Dirt as much as we did!
