Meal Planning 101 – How To Build A Great Grocery Shopping List

Day three!  Now you’ve learned how to get some inspiration for your meal plans with some free printables and how to choose meals.  Today, we’ll focus on building your shopping list.  I think that this is the most important part of meal planning.  A good shopping list will help you stay on track in the grocery store, and will help you save money!

I like to organize my grocery lists by aisle so that I do not get side-tracked at the store and start buying all sorts of different things I don’t need.

A great grocery list will save you time and money, so make sure that you write down everything – even the spices and the flour.  I usually start with a scrap piece of paper and just in a long list, write down each ingredient for each meal on the menu.  So, if the menu says that on day one you’re to have cheeseburger macaroni for dinner one night and crockpot teriyaki chicken and rice for dinner the next night, write down every ingredient:

velveeta
pasta
cream
flour
butter
ground beef
garlic salt
black pepper
paprika
chicken breast
teriyaki sauce
brown rice
broccoli
salt

Then go shopping at home.  Start crossing things off of your list.  You’ll be surprised how many ingredients you already have.  I just did a quick walk-through of my kitchen and was able to make my list look like this:

velveeta
pasta
cream
flour
butter

ground beef
garlic salt
black pepper

paprika
chicken breast
teriyaki sauce
brown rice

broccoli
salt

Once I have shopped at home, I re-write my grocery list on the menu plan sheet, or on my individual store shopping list, and I go shopping!  Don’t forget to bring any store coupons you have, these are really your most beneficial coupons to save money.  Kroger sends me personalized coupons about once every 45 days to save money on the items I purchase most.  Be careful with your coupons though, because coupons are usually for processed foods and will end up costing you more money!
