Pulled pork! An American classic slow cooked at a low temperature, making the pork so tender that it just melts in your mouth.
BBQ Pulled Pork is my absolute FAVORITE food. When we lived in North Carolina, D.J. and I had a standing date-night at a small little BBQ restaurant, Ole Time Barbecue for BBQ Pulled Pork and collards. Ms. Stephanie knew our order, and had it on the table for us before we even sat down sometimes, and when we left North Carolina, Ms. Stephanie gave Anthony a t-shirt which he still wears today! It broke my heart having to leave NC, and the BBQ that I enjoyed so much.
Since we don’t have a smoker, I knew that I needed to find a new way to make the BBQ pulled pork that I miss so much from NC. The recipe below is a variation of Carolina BBQ Pulled Pork – the apple cider vinegar and spices make it NC BBQ, but I have added a little homemade BBQ sauce (only 1/4 cup) to the bottom of the crockpot when making this recipe to help make a sauce for the pork.
Whether it’s an easy dinner you’re looking for, a game-day recipe, or if you’re feeding the masses, this easy CrockPot BBQ Pulled Pork is the perfect choice. After I cook the pork and shred it, I like to leave it in the crockpot on warm – especially on Football Sunday! It keeps the pork warm (obviously), and it also helps the pork absorb all of the bbq sauce, making it even more moist and delicious.
1, 6 lb bone-in pork shoulder
2 tbsp each; salt paprika, garlic and mesquite seasoning (I used McCormicks – it’s with the rest of the spices at the grocery store, divided
1/2 tbsp black pepper, red pepper flakes (optional), divided
1/4 cup homemade BBQ sauce
1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
1/8 cup packed brown sugar
In the base of your crockpot, combine 1 tbsp each; salt, paprika, mesquite seasoning, 2 tsp black pepper, brown sugar, bbq sauce and apple cider vinegar. Stir to combine.
Add pork, fat side UP, and sprinkle over remaining seasoning.
Cook for 8-10 hours on low.
Remove bone and shred pork with two forks – it should just fall apart on you.
Toss pulled pork with BBQ sauce in the bottom of the crockpot and serve with extra BBQ sauce if desired.
